With just five ingredients, you can make this amazing and unique Blistered Shishito Peppers with Toasted Sesame dipping sauce recipe! If you have been craving something fresh, new and different from all of the other wonderful but cliche appetizers and game day snacks, these peppers are it! This recipe is naturally low-carb, gluten free and dairy free, and if you use a ripe avocado in place of the mayo in the dip, it is vegan as well! It is a truly dietarily inclusive appetizer!
What are Shishito Peppers?
Shishito Peppers are a green pepper that look similar to a jalapeño, but are wrinkly and slightly lighter in color. They have very thin skin which makes them very popular for blistering on the grill.
This variety of peppers is generally very mild, but every once in a while you’ll find one pepper that packs a little heat! It is like a little pepper lottery. But even the spicy winner is not too spicy, so not to worry!
Ingredients
- Whole Shishito Peppers
- Sesame Oil
- Mayonnaise
- Coconut Aminos
- Lemon Juice
How to Blister the Shishitos
1. To prep the peppers, all you need to do is rinse and dry them.
2. Then, throw them in a large bowl and toss them with a little toasted sesame oil. Sesame oil has a very high smoke point which makes it perfect for blistering these peppers. The delicious flavor of the oil is an added bonus and works seamlessly with the Toasted Sesame Dipping Sauce.
3. Sprinkle the peppers with a little salt. If you have a salt grinder, a few grinds of coarse salt is perfect!
- There are two really good ways to blister these peppers. The first option is on your grill. In this case, you would heat it to 400+ degrees. Once it is nice and hot, throw your peppers in a grill basket and then put the basket on the grates of the grill. Close the lid. Every 2 minutes, open the lid and shake the basket of peppers to move them around so that all sides get dark and blistered. The other option is use a cast iron skillet. In this case, heat the skillet on your stovetop burner on high heat. Once it is hot, toss the peppers into the skillet. With this method, you would also shake the pan every 2 minutes or so to get the peppers fairly evenly blackened.
- The Peppers don’t need to be completely black. In fact you should still have quite a bit of that colorful green showing. Remove them from the heat and sprinkle them with a couple grinds of coarse salt.
How to Make the Toasted Sesame Sauce
The easy Toasted Sesame Dipping Sauce is such a flavorful compliment to the freshness of these peppers. It is slightly sweet, creamy and full of the rich toasted sesame flavor.
1. Simply whisk together the sesame oil, coconut aminos, and lemon juice together.
2. Add the mayonnaise and mix together until smooth and creamy. That’s it!
This sauce would be really good in place of the honey mustard sauce on these Veggie Wraps with Honey Mustard Sauce.
Serve the peppers with the dipping sauce and watch them disappear before your eyes! I swear, I could serve 10lbs of these peppers and they would be gone first and my friends would still be asking for more! Now, that is how I gauge a successful appetizer!
