If you are looking for Winter decor ideas, this DIY Tiny Tree project is perfect for filling small spaces in your home, dorm or apartment with the festiveness of the Winter season! It is super simple, but if you want a little more, it has the extra option of a tree hunting adventure! Read on for fun ways to repurpose items you have around the house into tree stands for your very own, unique winter decor.
How to use Trees in your Winter Decor…
I don’t know about you, but I LOVE tiny trees! As I sit here and look around my house, I see 4 little trees that we have up for the holiday season. Ok, let’s be honest, they will stay up through January and into February until the needles start falling off on the real ones, and Trav calls me out with, “Really? Are we going to keep our Christmas lights up all year too?!” on the artificial ones. Which, btw, YES, we do keep Christmas lights up all year. Just the white ones and just on our deck! Sorry, not sorry! Hehe.
So anyway, you can find the little fake trees everywhere, or the sweet little bottle brush trees that would be perfect on a table, or shelf. I do love having a few of these types of trees around, but I also love having real trees. Everyone loves the really big trees, but although I also enjoy those, I would rather fill the smaller spaces in our home with a variety of small ones! When you cut them down yourself, they are perfectly Charlie Brownish and smell so nice!
If you live in an area where you have the opportunity to cut some off your property, then lucky you! Otherwise, in most states, you can purchase permits to cut your own tree down on National Forest land. You can get more information about that here. It is such a fun adventure to go out and cut your own tree! We pack up the dogs and a picnic and a thermos of coffee, or cocoa, or Hot Toddy and set out on our very own Griswold family style mission to find the perfect Christmas tree! If you haven’t done this, I recommend putting it on your list of fun things to do during the holiday season! ♥️
For this stand, you will need a large gallon sized jar. I am using a jar that I had from Ikea, but you can find them in your local craft score or HERE on Amazon. You will also need something to fill the jar with for weight and to secure the trunk. So, if you are a wine drinker with big ideas, I bet you too, have a box of corks. Yes? And if you are like me, you are constantly trying to think of ingenious ways to use these corks. Well, I feel like this is one of those super cute and ingenious ways! You could also use stones if you have access to some pretty ones. They will be sitting in the jar of water, so they will be really beautiful because you know how stones are alway prettiest when they are wet.
How to Secure your Tiny Tree with Corks…
- First, trim the little branches off the bottom of the trunk. You should have about 8 inches of bare trunk.
- Next, if you are using corks, fill the jar about halfway full with corks.
- Now, slide the tree into the jar, through the corks so that the trunk touches the bottom of the jar.
- Now you can fill the rest of the jar with corks. once it is filled to the top, squeeze a few more corks in so that they are securely bracing the tree so it is standing straight upright.
- Finally, fill the jar with water
- Add pine cones attached with floral wire, (similar to how we created this pine cone garland) or other ornaments or fairy lights and top your tree with a ribbon, or other tree topper.
- Find a perfect spot for your tree!
How to put it together with Stones…
- Trim the little branches off the bottom of the trunk. You should have about 8 inches of bare trunk.
- Fill the Jar halfway with water.
- Place the tree in the jar.
- Hold the tree straight and add the stones to the jar, keeping an eye on the water level.
- Fill the jar completely with stones and then top it off with water.
- Find the perfect spot for your tree! Be careful, it will be fairly heavy, but this will keep your tree solidly upright!
Create a Tree stand with a Box…
When I originally started this project, I intended to use an Amazon box for my tree stand. It felt like the perfect way to repurpose a few of the millions of Amazon boxes that were coming to our door this time of year! Unfortunately, the tree that I wanted to use was a little too big for this plan to work. BUT, if you have a really teeny tree, like 2 feet or shorter, you could absolutely use this technique!
- Grab a box. The size of your tree, will determine the size of the box you will need. Really though, for a tree about 2 feet tall, you will just need a box the size of a boot box. This is basically 14x8x5 inches.
- Turn the box over, and carefully cut an “X” in the bottom with a utility knife.
- Slide the trunk of the tree into the “X”. If the “x” is a little small, use your knife to make the “x” a little larger, but make sure it is just barely big enough to accommodate the tree and hold it securely.
- Grab a Jar, or bowl and fill it with water. Put it under the box and set the trunk into the water. If you aren’t going to keep this tree up for long, you can skip the water step. Without water, it will still stay fresh for a couple of weeks, but if you want to have it up longer, make sure he has some water.
- Use a pretty blanket or scarf to cover the box and act as a little tree skirt.
- Find a place for your little tree!
Battery operated fairy lights like these are light and so easy to string up and add a sweet, festive glow. You can, of course hang ornaments on your tree, or if you would like to keep it more natural, you can add pinecones, or whatever fun pieces of nature you find in your yard!
