What is Candied Bacon?
Boy oh boy, am I honored to get to be the one who introduces you to what is, in my humble opinion, one of the absolute best ways to make bacon!
Candied Bacon is a technique in which you coat slices of Bacon in sweet ingredients such as brown sugar, or maple syrup and then bake it until the sugars have caramelized on the bacon. It becomes slightly sticky and candy coated. It is a delicious smoky sweet treat that can be served by itself, or incorporated into different recipes as you will learn here.
Candied bacon is one of those little cooking jewels that yields huge reward with very little effort. And, you certainly don’t have to form the bacon into rosettes, you can simply lay the strips on a baking sheet and bake them flat, but creating little Candied Bacon Roses is so easy and is such a fun touch. And…you know I’m all about trying to make everyday life special, every day, so…here is an easy way to do just that! ♥️
There are a million different ways to buy bacon. I would highly recommend that for these Bacon Roses, you purchase bacon from your local butcher, or meat counter at your Grocery store. I prefer a good quality thick cut bacon, the thick cut makes it a little sturdier as you twist and wrap it into a rose. With that being said, of course you can make these with whichever brand and cut that you prefer.
To make these little Candied Bacon Roses, mix all of the coating ingredients together in a large bowl and add the strips of bacon. Toss the bacon in the coating until the bacon is evenly coated.
Ingredients
What you need to make Candied Bacon Roses
- Bacon- I like using a thicker cut because it is a little studier and holds its shape a little better. You can find this in the butchers case at your grocery store.
- Brown Sugar- Either dark or light brown sugar will work!
- Maple Syrup- Use the real deal here! 🙂
- Mustard- Use either a Dijon or yellow mustard here, no need for a fancy flavored mustard.
- Pumpkin Spice or Ground Cinnamon- This is optional, but adds another layer of flavor to these roses. Feel free to skip it if you just want the smoky bacon to be the star!
- Caynenne- This adds a little heat to the smoky sweet! Again, optional, but a good addition if you like a little spice!
- Salt- just a pinch will intensify all of the flavors.
To Form the Roses…
Then, to create the roses, thread a skewer through one end of the bacon about 1/4″ from the end of the bacon. Tightly wind the bacon around the skewer until it is completely woven around one time. Then, twist the bacon and continue to wind it around the skewer until you’ve reached the end of the bacon strip. Carefully remove the Candied Bacon Rose from the skewer and use a toothpick to secure all of the, “petals” of the rose. I know it sounds confusing, but I promise it is easy. Check my video below for a good visual!
To bake these roses, line a muffin tin with paper cupcake liners. This makes cleanup a piece of cake. Place one rose in each muffin spot. Bake at 375° for 20 minutes or until bacon is desired doneness. Remove from the oven and remove roses to cool on baking rack. Now…just figure out a fun way to use them!????
How to Use your Candied Bacon Roses?
Once you have made these, you can simply pop them on the plate (or in your mouth!) as is, or you can do something a little more creative. Have you had bacon on your waffle before? Top a waffle with some butter, syrup and a candied bacon rose right in the middle. Not only will it look pretty and special, the syrupy waffle with the salty sweet bacon is so delish. Yum Yum. Another fun way to use them is by placing a bacon rosette on top of an Egg Bite. These are so easy and are a perfect make ahead breakfast that you can simply warm up while you get ready for your day. Finally, I think the ultimate breakfast love gift is a Bacon Rose topped Eggs Benedict. Ohhhhh yes! Beautiful, delicious decadence.
By the way, these Candied Bacon Roses are not just for breakfast! Place them on top of a twice baked potato to make a basic potato a little bougie…Or how about a Candied Bacon Rose on top of your salad? Use your imagination! Any time you use bacon, consider using a Bacon Rose. And if you would rather not have your bacon candied, you can simply use the rose rolling technique to roll up a plain piece of bacon. It will be just as pretty and it’s bacon, so of course it is going to taste soooo goooood.
