Have you ever had a lavender latte? If you haven't, you're in for a treat! It is a lightly sweet latte with a soft lavender essence. You can find one at Starbucks in the spring, but I guarantee you can make a better one! Use a local coffee or a high quality specialty coffee like this one from Freelance Coffee Project to make it over the top delicious.

What is a lavender latte?

A lavender latte is a hot coffee beverage made with steamed milk and lavender syrup. It is topped with a dollop of whipped cream and sprinkled with fresh or dried lavender flowers for a lightly sweet latte with soft floral notes. It is instagram worthy for both beauty and deliciousness!

Ingredients

  • Coffee or Espresso
  • Lavender Simple Syrup- recipe here
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Milk of your choice. For the most decadent option, use whole milk or half and half. For a skinny or dairy free option, use oat or almond milk.
  • Whipped Cream
  • Dried or Fresh Lavender

How to make Espresso without an Espresso Machine

Technically, espresso is a technique to brew what is basically a concentrated shot of coffee. It requires a finer grid and more pressure, vs coffee that uses a coarser grind and more of a pour over pressure. Both are delicious and both will work in this recipe.

Espresso machines can be quite spendy, but not to worry! There are ways to make espresso without breaking the bank! Here are a few options that you can find on Amazon for a fair price.

  • French Press
    • This elegant little pot is my favorite tool for making a nice, rich coffee without a fancy machine. And whether you're enjoying summer brunch on the deck, or by the fire on a cold winter day, who doesn't love a french press?
  • Bialetti Moka Pot
    • Ok so this isn't technically an espresso maker either, but this little percolator makes a concentrated bit of coffee that packs a punch. So it is tough to tell that it doesn't qualify as actual espresso. It's also a great little pot to take camping for a campfire coffee!
  • Breville Barista Espresso Machine
    • This is the most expensive option, but it is an investment that will last you for years! We have this machine and have used it multiple times every single day for the last 8 years. It is a reliable little workhorse that makes delicious espresso every single time.

Lavender Syrup

Make a batch of this Lavender Syrup. Use some of it in this recipe and then you can store the rest in the fridge for about a month. You can use it on everything from adding a little to the glaze on this Citrus Glazed Orange Cardamom Cake, to sneaking a little into these Sugared Lemon Cookies. Or for another lavender drink, add a shot to this Thyme and Grapefruit Cocktail!

How to heat the milk

If you have a steamer, then you are set! If not, here are some other techniques to replicate the steamy, foaminess of a coffee shop latte.

The simplest way is to microwave a cup of milk. You can also heat milk in a saucepan on the stove.

Once it is heated, to create the foam, use a milk frother like this one, which is a fairly inexpensive option on Amazon. Another option is to use a whisk and whisk the heated milk vigorously until it is light and bubbly. This isn't going to be the same as a frother, but you'll get some bubbles and lightness. And it will still be delicious.

How to Put it all together

For a special coffee, I like to use a special mug, because if you're going to do it, do it right, right? But of course the mug won't affect the deliciousness, and any mug will do.

Pour the 2 shots of espresso into the mug. Add the lavender syrup into the steamed milk and then pour that lavender milk into the mug over the espresso.

This could be the end and you can now enjoy your delicious coffee drink. Or, you can keep going. Add a dollop of whipped cream to the top and then a sprinkle of some fresh or dried culinary lavender to the top for a beautiful and decadent coffee treat!

Now relax, and enjoy!

  4. For a decadent addition, make lavender whipped cream! To make this, add 2 tablespoon lavender syrup to one cup of heavy whipping cream. Whip it, untilย  you have whipped cream to your desired thickness. Add it to your lavender latte for an extra level of yum!
