If you are looking for a cocktail that will not only be delicious, but will impress your guests with swanky style, look no further than this Dead Man’s Last Request Bourbon cocktail! Made with bourbon, ginger beer, lemon juice and garnished with a lighted cinnamon stick and candied lemon slice to create one of the booziest, sexiest and mysterious of fall drinks. Plus with a name like that, it must be good!
Arguably the creepiest of fall drinks, but oh so tasty! The drink itself is made with very basic ingredients, but the garnishes are what really make it special.
Ingredients
- Bourbon- Bourbon is a type of American whiskey that is made with at least 51% corn, with the remaining 49% of the mash made with a grain such as wheat or rye. Adding corn to the mash gives bourbon a slightly sweeter flavor than other whiskeys.
- Ginger Beer- Ginger beer is different from ginger ale, as it has a stronger, more intense ginger flavor. Like ginger ale, it is usually non-alcoholic.
- Lemon Juice- Use freshly squeezed lemon juice. It really is better than anything you can buy pre-squeezed. If you want to make one cocktail, you will need just one lemon. Use one half for the juice, and the other half for the candied lemon slice!
- Cinnamon stick- You can usually find these in the spice aisle of your grocery store. Double check that you are getting the sticks and not the ground cinnamon! 🙂
How to make Candied Lemons
I love to make a big batch of candied citrus. I find so many fun and tasty ways to use the slices. Candied lemons, candied oranges and even candied limes and grapefruit are a super easy way to add elegance, sophistication, and flavor to a desserts, drinks, and and appetizers!
To caramelize lemon slices for this cocktail, simply slice your lemon into thin slices (no more than 1/4″ thick).
Then, pat the slices dry. The drier they are the better, so the sugar sticks to them without immediately turning to syrup.
Dust the slices with a thin coating of brown sugar and then lay them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, or on a cooling rack, sprayed with non-stick spray, and placed on a baking sheet, as is shown in the picture below- although those are not coated in sugar yet.
Bake the lemon slices at 350° for 20 minutes, flipping once after 10 minutes. The goal is to caramelize the sugar, which of course is what turns the lemon the lovely caramelly brown color in the cocktail. Every oven is slightly different, so just pull your lemons when you are happy with the color. This should be about 10 minutes per side.

How to Put this Swanky Bourbon Cocktail Together
There really isn’t much to it! Just grab your sexiest lowball glass, or check out THESE glasses on Amazon.
Add a large ice cube to the glass. I recently bought this ice cube tray that makes clear ice cubes! It adds so much to the cocktail experience rather than a little scoop of plain old ice cubes! If there is a cocktail lover- especially whiskey, bourbon, or scotch in your life, consider this if you need a gift. It really is pretty fun.
Add the Bourbon, lemon juice and ginger beer to the glass. Gently stir.
Garnish by making a small slit about halfway through your candied lemon wheel and place it on the rim of the glass. Add a cinnamon stick and use a lighter to light the end until it smolders. It won’t have a flame like a candle, but it will have a smoldering smokiness.
Serve right away and enjoy!
